Grand Alaska – Prince William Sound & The Copper River Region

Ultimate land & sea Alaskan adventure
Description

Reviews

The Grand Alaska is 9 to 12 days in length. With the anticipated congestion in Denali for the next few years, we aimed to create a bucket list trip in an off-the-beaten path area! The Grand Alaska is the ultimate Alaska land and sea adventure featuring the very best of Alaska’s scenery and wildlife, all the while staying with the tranquil theme Alaska is known for. The journey is a one-way adventure, beginning in Anchorage and ending in coastal Cordova, a town only accessible by boat or plane (note some trips may start in Cordova). Alongside the voyage, plan for a stay at a lodge overlooking Orca Inlet, a brown bear viewing tour, flightseeing via helicopter, a float trip down the famous Copper River, and exploration of the 700,000 acre Copper River Delta. Having a leg of this trip in Cordova also allows for an overnight (or two!) in Juneau on your own.

The voyage varies from 3 to 6 days in length in breathtaking Prince William Sound. The land portion of this trip focuses on the best off the beaten path experiences we can provide. Plan for an all-day wildlife viewing trip, focusing on brown bears, accessing these areas either by boat or small plane and go ashore for better viewing and photographic opportunities. Take a helicopter ride to view the Million Dollar Bridge and take in spectacular view of Childs Glacier, Miles Glacier, iceberg filled Miles Lake, and the Copper River and Delta. Enjoy a float trip down the Copper River, well known for producing the crown jewel of the salmon world. Take exploratory hikes of The Copper River Delta, one of North America’s most productive wetlands, as well as Sheridan Glacier. For a better perspective, take kayaks out on Sheridan Glacier Lake.

Flight in between land and voyage portions are included. Most meals included. The land portion is limited to 8 guests making for a unique and specialized experience.

Tour Reviews

One of the best trips we ever…

One of the best trips we ever took….boat was cool, food was foodie quality, tours on land were adventurous. Service was a 10. But the midnight stars close enough to the glacier to hear the calving was extraordinary. Highly recommend over a cruise!

Fantastic small launch tour in wilderness area

Our time on the Discovery was the highlight of our visit to Alaska in May/June 2018. From Anchorage we went to the Port of Whittier on the Prince William Sound, which is largely a wilderness area. We boarded our small launch about lunch time, in time for hors d’ oeuvres before we headed off into the Sound. The Discovery had accommodation for 12 guests in 6 cabins, together with 4 crew. My wife was taken aback to find that we had to share the two bathrooms and sleep in bunks. In spite of all this we all rubbed along together well, and the chef feed us exceptionally well with meals also accompanied by an extensive range of wines. The procedure was to have two expeditions each day during our five days. This could involve kayaking along the face of a glacier in the broken pieces of ice, or a walk on a small island to see Beaver dams or other wildlife. One of the crew was a naturalist who accompanies tours to Antarctica as one of his contract activities. We really enjoyed it, but it does require a decent level of fitness to get the most from the daily activities.

Terrific experience

We enjoyed our experience with Discovery voyages. We liked the opportunity to cruise the Prince William Sound with experienced staff and went kayaking and hiking in beautiful places. We discovered our love of Alaskan wilderness and hope to explore other places. The small boat offers more opportunities than a larger cruise boat would ever deliver.

Simply amazing small boat cruise

This intimate small boat cruise captained by Dean and Meg was one of the most outstanding experiences I’ve ever had. They are extremely knowledgeable about Prince William Sound and planned a 5 day, 4 night cruise exactly catered to our desires. Amazing wildlife, lots of hiking and kayaking, and incredible gourmet meals.
I highly recommend one group rents the entire boat for 12.
The vacation of a lifetime!
