  • Grand Alaska Voyage

    The Grand Alaska Voyage, guided by naturalist and photographer Hugh Rose, is the ultimate Alaska land and sea adventure featuring the very best of Alaska’s scenery and wildlife. The journey begins in Anchorage or Fairbanks and includes a 5 to 7-day cruise in world-famous Prince William Sound  aboard the small ship M/V Discovery.  The land portion of this trip couldn’t be grander: Travel by road into Alaska’s interior for an intimate three-day tour of Denali National Park, overnighting deep in the park at a private lodge.     July 2016 Itinerary

    Day 1:  Arrive Fairbanks.  Overnight River’s Edge Resort.  Please plan to take a cab from the airport and arrive by 6 PM for a welcome dinner.  Meet your guide Hugh Rose.

    Day 2:  Breakfast 8:30am.  After breakfast travel by van towards Denali National Park, about a 5 hour drive.  Overnight Earthsong Lodge (or similar) in Healy. All meals included.

    Day 3-4:  Today we tour into Denali National Park by private vehicle.  We will stop often to look for wildlife, and enjoy a box picnic lunch en route to Skyline Lodge in Kantishna, 90 miles inside Denali National Park.  Enjoy exploring the exquisite wilderness around Skyline Lodge.  Great photo opportunities.  Flight-seeing tour included weather permitting. Overnight for 2 nights at Skyline Lodge.  Shared baths.  All meals.

    Day 5:  After breakfast we journey back through Denali National Park giving us more opportunities for great photography and, weather permitting, views of Denali.  This is a long day of road travel.  Overnight in Anchorage.

    Day 6-10:  Begin your adventure today with a scenic drive along Turnagain Arm  (south of Anchorage along Chugach State Park) to the port town of Whittier and your journey into Prince William Sound.  Many photographic opportunities along the way.  The great crew of Discovery Voyages will meet you upon arrival.  Enjoy a welcome lunch reception and begin your exploration of this special place.  Includes hiking, kayaking, whale watching, glaciers and great food.  Shared bath.

    Day 11:  Return to Whittier this afternoon after 7 wonderful days exploring Prince William Sound with your guide Hugh Rose and the Discovery Crew.  Transfer to Anchorage by van for dinner on your own this evening.  Overnight accommodations in Anchorage.

    Day 12:  Depart for home.  Airport transfers are not included.  Short cab ride to the airport, or potential of shuttle van from your hotel or B&B.

    August 2016 Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrive Anchorage. Overnight accommodations included.

    Day 2-5: After breakfast, meet your guide Hugh Rose.  Begin your adventure today with a scenic drive along Turnagain Arm (south of Anchorage along Chugach State Park) to the port town of Whittier and your journey into Prince William Sound.  Many photographic opportunities along the way.  The great crew of Discovery Voyages will meet you upon arrival.  Enjoy a welcome lunch reception and begin your exploration of this special place.  Includes hiking, kayaking, whale watching, glaciers and great food.  Shared bath.

    Day 6: Return to Whittier this afternoon after 6 wonderful days exploring Prince William Sound with your guide Hugh Rose and the Discovery Crew.  Transfer to Anchorage by van for dinner on own this evening.  Overnight in Anchorage.

    Day 7: Travel by van towards Denali National Park, about a 5 hour drive.  Overnight Earthsong Lodge (or similar) in Healy. All meals.

    Day 8-9: Today we tour into Denali National Park by private vehicle.  We will stop often to look for wildlife, and enjoy a box picnic lunch en route to Skyline Lodge in Kantishna, 90 miles inside Denali National Park.  Days in Denali will be filled with photo opportunities, observing wildlife, independent hiking, and just absorbing the magnificent surroundings. A highlight for many visitors is flightseeing around Mt. McKinley in a small bush plane and photographing the mountains and glaciers from overhead (included in trip, weather permitting). Overnight for 2 nights at Skyline Lodge. Shared baths.  All meals.

    Day 10: Today after breakfast we journey back through Denali National Park giving us more opportunities for great photography and, weather permitting, views of Denali.  Overnight at Bed & Breakfast in Fairbanks.   Farewell dinner included.

    Day 11: Depart for home.  Airport transfers are not included.

    Trip includes:

    • Photographer naturalist guide Hugh Rose throughout
    • Private van transportaton
    • Accommodations (prices based on double occupancy)
    • Discovery Voyages cruise with Captain Dean and crew, and most meals.
    • Trip is limited to 8 passengers.

    Exclusions:

    • No discounts for unused services.
    • Airport transfers not included.

    Space is limited to eight people to keep the group size small while traveling by van in Denali. From the welcome dinner in Anchorage through our days in Prince William Sound and Denali Park, photo opportunities will abound. Professional photographer and naturalist Hugh Rose guides the trip provides photographic insight and advice along the way.

    $7,600 per person. 12 Day: Denali National Park + 6 Day Classic Voyage. July 25 - August 5 (Land portion not shown on calendar). Arrive in Fairbanks on July 25th, travel towards Denali on 26th, go in to Denali National Park via private transportation and stay at Skyline Lodge on 27th and 28th, travel to Anchorage on 29th, and come on board the Discovery in Prince William Sound 30th - 4th. Return to Anchorage the evening of the 4th, and fly home 5th. Travel with Fairbanks based worldwide guide, geologist, photographer, and naturalist, Hugh Rose.

      I celebrated my 50th birthday onboard the Discovery for a week’s vacation with my family. It was the trip of a lifetime, and one I hope to take again in the future. I loved every second of my first Alaska cruise!
