  • Harriman Fjord Overnight

For those travelers on a limited schedule but wanting to experience the grandeur of Prince William Sound’s famed Harriman Fjord/Barry Arm, with its dozen glaciers and 10,000 foot mountain peaks, we offer the Harriman Fjord Overnight Voyage. New for 2013, this tour packs in the sights and activities loved by Discovery’s guests. View the wildlife and spectacular scenery of the northwestern Sound from the deck of the M/V Discovery, go for a guided hike on shore, and kayak amid the ice floes near massive tidewater glaciers. While the Discovery pulls into a snug anchorage for the night, guests enjoy a gourmet dinner served in the upper deck salon where large windows surround them, creating a magnificent natural dinner theater.

    Full Itinerary

    Day 1

Voyage begins in Anchorage with overnight accommodations at a comfortable downtown B & B, within walking distance of many fine restaurants. (Dinner on your own)

    Day 2

Guided kayaking near glaciers of Prince William SoundThe Discovery crew picks up at B & B with van shuttle to port of Whittier. Boarding Discovery and departing Whittier for Harriman Fjord at midday. Lunch served along the way on this 4 – 5 hour cruise (depending on wildlife sightings). Marine mammals such as Sea Otters are common, as are Harbor Seals. Black–Legged Kittiwakes nest in large colonies, as do Glaucous–winged Gulls, and often Pigeon Guillemots. Depending on the weather and our group interests, we’ll watch for an opportunity to go on a hike in the surrounding hills, or kayak amongst the floating pieces of glacier ice which have recently dropped from the face of one of the tidewater glaciers in the immediate area. Anchor for the night in Harriman Fjord or Barry Arm with gourmet dinner featuring local sockeye salmon or fresh halibut. (Other dietary needs can be met with enough advance notice)

    Day 3

Boys hiking in Prince William Sound AlaskaWake to the spectacular scenery of tidewater glaciers and coastal mountains covered in the rich vegetation of the world’s northern-most temperate coastal rainforest. Depending on group interests and the weather, after breakfast a short hike to a prominent vista or kayaking in the floating glacial ice are this morning’s possible off-boat activities. Returning to port of Whittier in mid-afternoon, with return van transfer back to Anchorage and your overnight accommodations at downtown B & B. Dinner this evening is on your own.

    Day 4

Depart Anchorage for your home city or extend your Alaskan vacation with a visit to Denali National Park or perhaps fly into any of the many salmon fishing places or bear viewing places outside of Anchorage. Other suggested destinations for world-class bear viewing and photography are Silver Salmon Creek Lodge or renting an auto and seeing more of Alaska via the road system.

Note: Our standard packing list should be fine for this overnight voyage with perhaps suggesting that guests reduce their clothing needs accordingly since this is only an overnight trip.
